Trachycarpus fortunei

Trachycarpus fortunei

Very hardy plant with slow growth. It prefers sunlight and half-shade. Plant suitable for large and small gardens, for cultivation in pots, for groups (several plants of the same variety) and for creating shrubland and woods. The palm is characterized by a solitary, unbranched, and non-bushy trunk (called a stem or “stipe”), covered by a dense weave of brown fibers. It grows relatively slowly, reaching a height of 10-12 meters. Every year, at the apex of the stem, new evergreen fan-shaped leaves develop, composed of 35-40 segments. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green and glossy, while the underside is light green with a greyish hue. These leaves are borne on sturdy petioles with spiny edges. Simultaneously, the lower leaves drop off, although the bases of the petioles remain attached to the stem. In late spring, long pendulous inflorescences of small yellow flowers form just below the leaves, followed by clusters of hemispherical blue-black fruits. The palm is not particularly demanding in terms of soil (provided it is not too clayey or excessively compacted) and is very easy to cultivate in containers. It is the only palm species that tolerates both snow and frost.
