Kalmia latifolia ‘Nipmuck’

Origin: North America. Evergreen shrub, dense and upright. Leaves elliptical-lanceolate, 5-10cm long, glossy dark green. Flowers: in May-June on the wood of the previous year, grouped in large terminal corymbs. This year, we have added many cultivars with colourful, eye-catching flowers to our collection. They are particularly attractive when the open flowers appear on the plant at the same time as the buds, often in a different colour. Few growing requirements: not calcareous soil, a good amount of moisture in the air, half-shade.

Camellia sasangua ‘Cleopatra’

Hardy plant with slow growth. It prefers sunlight and half-shade. It is suitable for cultivation in pots or for the formation of groups. It forms evergreen bushes which have the same habit and size as C. japonica. They are equally resistant to the cold, but the buds are less subject to frost damage, as they open from September to January when frosts are less frequent. Tolerates the sun (but not the extreme heat of a city balcony in the Italian sun).

Osmanthus heterophyllus

Very hardy plant with slow growth. It prefers sunlight and half-shade. It is a melliferous plant with perfumed flower. It is suitable for small gardens, for cultivation in pots, for creating shrubland and woods and for creating clipped hedges. Upright, dense habit. Leaves from oval to elliptic-elongate. The leaves on the upper branches usually have smooth edges, without thorns while those on the lower branches are toothed and thorny, leathery, glossy dark green and up to 6cm long, 3cm wide. White flowers grouped in small axillary clusters from September to the end of October. This variety is most suitable for hedging.

Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’

Hardy plant with medium growth. It prefers both full sunlight and half-shade. This plant is suitable for small gardens, for cultivation in pots, and for creating shrubland and woods (several varieties together), for creating clipped hedges and for large avenues and squares. It adapts to all types of soil but performs best in those that are sufficiently fresh, not overly dry; it also tolerates moderately calcareous soils. It withstands any pruning and forms beautiful compact hedges. It is certainly one of the plants that best adapts to living in containers of any size.

Leathery leaves, 3-5cm, from oval to elliptic, irregularly toothed, vibrant dark green. Abundant, very fragrant white flowers in March-April. Grows well in average garden soil.

Magnolia grandiflora ‘Gallisoniensis’

Hardy plant with slow growth. It can be placed in full sunlight or in half-shade. This plant is suitable for large gardens, for creating shrubland and woods (several varieties together) and for narrow avenues, piazzas, streets. It is pollution resistant and has a perfumed flower. If it is allowed to grow spontaneously without pruning it will have a conical, spreading habit with quite sparse branches. If however it is pruned every year at the end of winter, as the nurserymen in Pistoia do, the branches become denser and the plant becomes a pyramid, regular, impenetrable; when planted in a garden it will keep its shape and will become a majestic tree. Growing requirements: grows well in cool, acid, siliceous soil, but also adapts to other soils, except not chalky ones.

Nerium oleander ‘Italia’

Hardy plant with fast growth. Thrives in full sunlight. It has become the symbol of the Mediterranean summer and seaside resorts, which have a habitat similar to its primitive natural one, and where few other plants give such spectacular and long lasting flowering. Plant suitable for small and large gardens and for creating natural flowering hedges. It is pollution and sea climate resistant. It usually grows in poor soil but prefers to be planted in a garden where the soil is well-tilled and fertile. If grown in a pot, this must be deeper than it is wide to allow space for the long roots. In winter it should be kept quite dry but from spring to autumn it requires a lot of moisture.
